Brian Patrick Flynn’s Big, Bold Art

I have a Google alert set up for “family-friendly interiors” so I can keep up with what other designers and decorators are doing that they consider to be Interiors For Families. I could get fancier and more comprehensive with my keywords, but I haven’t – and interestingly, it’s a pretty quiet feed. There was a syndicated story, however, that appeared over and over again, several months ago, about a kid-friendly family room conceived by HGTV host and interior designer, Brian Patrick Flynn that totally captured my attention. I love his use of bold color and graphic pattern, as well as many of his practical choices for upholstery fabrics, storage schemes, etc. – but what really got me in this particular room will likely never be touched by any child. But it will certainly be well-loved by them!

The colorful, large-scale art above the fireplace is a custom, up-close photograph of a colorful Lego vignette.

Sophisticated and artful enough for a family living space, yet totally fun for the kids, too. For me, without this piece, the room would be nice, but not particularly special or unique. With it, in my opinion, it’s absolutely brilliant. Proof that great, big, bold art can really make a space.

This room, which kept creeping into my news feed, inspired me to follow Brian Patrick Flynn on Pinterest and Instagram, where I’ve seen (and loved) much more of his work. I began to notice that many of his spaces feature large-scale artwork – both high-brow and low-brow – that make Flynn’s room designs sing. I’m sharing some of my favorites from the designer’s portfolio, much of which is featured on HGTV.com.
