If you’re at all like me, you covet certain classic or iconic pieces of furniture, but can’t or won’t spend an automobile’s worth of cash to acquire them. You pop into stores like Design Within Reach and Room & Board, and sigh longingly, and futilely, as you browse the who’s who of important mid-century designers, like LeCorbusier, Eames and Saarinen.
I truly believe that great style (your style – whatever that may be!) doesn’t have to break the bank, but when you have your heart set on a specific piece, furniture shopping can be a very frustrating experience. I’ve found some great alternatives to well-known and more expensive pieces – not copycats or replicas per se, but sofas, tables, and chairs that give the same feeling and aesthetic for far less money.
This is of course just the tip of the iceberg, but it is a good reminder that, with a little legwork, you can find the perfect piece of furniture for your particular space – even if you can’t afford that Tulip dining set you’ve been pining for.
