Nursery Theme Thursday 2: Goodnight Moon

In the great green room, there was a telephone, and a red balloon, and a picture of…the cow jumping over the moon. And three little bears sitting on chairs.

Yes, by now I could recite the entire book by heart. For those not yet indoctrinated, I’m quoting Goodnight Moon – the classic children’s story penned by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd. It happens to be my son’s current favorite book – and this week’s inspiration for Nursery Theme Thursday.

The entire book is set in the bedroom of a cute bunny rabbit getting ready to go to bed, thus making this a favorite nap time and nighttime read. The bunny says goodnight to all of the things in his room, one at a time, before turning out the light and falling asleep. This seemed like a natural (yet still unexpected) fit for a nursery theme – it is a nursery! Albeit for a furry critter…

When you look at these mood boards, please bear in mind that they are not fully designed rooms. I’m merely selecting items to give a feel for how a nursery could look. All of the colors and intended style should be represented to some degree, but it’s not a comprehensive furnished and decorated plan. Make sense?

This one’s all about primary colors. The most important thing to set the tone would be to create a ‘great green room’ – beyond that, there are so many other accessorizing ideas directly from the book – a comb and brush, clocks, a red balloon (maybe a fun paper lantern chandelier?), an old-fashioned telephone, a young mouse (stuffed, of course!). You can take it as literally – or not – as you like. As you settle down in your bed tonight, just think of the possibilities, and how fun it would be for a baby to have a room just like the one in their favorite book.

Goodnight stars. Goodnight air. Goodnight noises everywhere.
