One Room Challenge – Week 4: Injury to Insult

I had a long post planned for this week’s One Room Challenge update, but a nasty little virus visited me on Wednesday morning (and not a respiratory one…), and resigned me to the fetal position for the vast majority of the day. I’m almost horizontal as I write this, while I have a brief break in the action. Bear with me here. And please forgive the lack of beautiful photography.

Here are the major themes – mostly a continuation from those of Week 3

After loads of prep work last week and early this, and a complete color matching fail between the woodwork paint (Fine Paints of Europe Hollandlac) and the wall paint (Benjamin Moore Aura), the colors are now in check and the first coat of the Hollandlac is up. The room is basically hermetically sealed right now with a negative air machine directing the fumes outside, so unfortunately I can’t see it, nor can I photograph it. I should have put my Dropcam in there! The built-in shelves are being sprayed in the shop this afternoon. By the end of this week, everything, with the exception of the ceiling, will be 100% painted and (hopefully) looking gorgeous…in the most masculine way, of course.

A plasterer was sent down from the heavens straight into the welcoming embrace of the Manbrary. He will begin his work, repairing cracks and sagging in the ceiling, and restoring parts of the decorative plaster, on Tuesday of next week, and finish on Thursday. The plaster will dry overnight, and the ceiling will be painted on Friday morning – that’s 11/6 for those keeping track.

I’m sneaking in the install of the Roman shades on Monday the 2nd, since the paint will be cured by then and there won’t be any work happening that day. I did get a sneak peek of them at the workroom last week – I’m so pleased with how they look! Even on the reverse side with straight pins :).

The cut-and-bound rug was originally scheduled to be installed this morning. When I called Tuesday to reschedule, they said late November was the next available date. Oy. Everyone wants their carpet installed by Thanksgiving, of course. After some considerable begging and bargaining, I managed to score an install for that same Friday 11/6, right after the ceiling is painted. The tape and paper will literally be removed right before they arrive.

Which is the same day I had planned to have my electrician come to install the new light fixture – if it arrives by then. Big if, actually. I’m going to schedule him for Monday 11/9, which is the absolute latest it could go in. My photo shoot is Tuesday 11/10. Already cutting it close with that alone!

Most of the major pieces being added to the room are either in transit or not yet shipped. This one is truly going to be right down to the wire. Despite my best efforts. Not for nothing they call this a “challenge!” But I could have done without the virus. Moms just aren’t allowed to get sick.

Don’t forget to check out both the 20 invited/sponsored participants, and the guest participants linking up each Thursday at Calling it Home.

LOVE the Roman shades, those are going to be awesome. You certainly have had your share of unexpected challengs but somehow I feel everything will work out and your room is going to be gorgeous..in a manly sort of way.

Thank you, Linda! Not surprisingly, the install of the shades has also been delayed, as the painter still has a few things to wrap up tomorrow. I was so looking forward to getting those in!! Par for the course, I guess.

Glad I’m not the only one coming down to the wire. It’s gonna be gorgeous, kelly! I love that plaid shade. Hope you feel better!

I’m so excited about this room! It’s going to be amazing, and what a roller coaster to follow. Isn’t it the truth? Doing this challenge in real time is the most fun I’ve had in the blog world, and likewise has produced the most panic! GOOD LUCK! I’m cheering for you!

That’s so nice of you to say, and it’s so true about the panic. During the challenge, I often find myself wondering why I put myself through all of this and self-inflict all of the time pressure, but when it’s over, I’m soooo grateful for the process and having it DONE! There is no better feeling for me than completion. Can’t wait to stick a fork in this one! And I’ll be watching to see what you end up doing with your door. I’m jealous of your curb appeal – my house needs that badly!

It is startling how quickly one day can snowball into high anxiety with this challenge! I thought I was totally on top of things and now I am biting my nails, haha. Good luck on all your scheduling/rescheduling…I know it is going to be amazing….in the most masculine, gorgeous way! Those plaid shades are to die!

You are down to the wire girl! I am sure when it comes together it’s going to be amazing!!!! Hang in there, you can get it done!

    • Kelly R. - Interiors For Families on November 1, 2015 at 2:16 PM

Totally. This Friday is a big day. I’ll know for sure then if it’s going to actually be finished in time or not. Thank you for your encouragement – it really means a lot!

Ah hate that you got the bug!! I hope you feel better quickly! Cannot wait for this gorgeous reveal!!

Ugh, yes, but thankfully it was the 24-hour variety, and I just had to get back my appetite and energy during the latter part of last week. It seems like everyone came down with something last week. Hoping that’s the worst that will happen – at least until this round of ORC is complete!

I can not wait to see the paint; that will be so transformative. In my dream scenario, I would have done FIne paints of Europe for my girl’s closet but it didn’t make it into the budget. Anyway, I can’t wait to see yours!!!

I’ve been standing in the room a bit this weekend, and I’m still just seeing a beige room. Granted, the floor is still papered, the windows papered and taped, the walls need a second coat and the ceiling needs everything. Usually it’s the window treatments that really make me go “Ahhh!” and now I’ll have to wait for those (and just about everything else) until Friday. I’m hoping my vision will begin to take shape then because I’m a little nervous right now! By the way, that closet is adorable and I am so looking forward to your reveal!
