If you live in the Boston area, or have plans to visit, I would highly recommend a trip to the Adams National Historical Park, which includes the family homestead in what is now Quincy, Massachusetts. The house at “Peacefield” (also referred to as “The Old House”) was originally purchased by John and Abigail Adams, and remained in their family for four generations (1788-1927). Talk about Interiors for Families! The Adamses wrote the book.
I realize this isn’t standard fare for design and family blogs, but as an American history buff, I can’t help but be fascinated by how families lived hundreds of years ago, and how a continuously occupied home can evolve over the course of several generations. Perhaps other people feel the same way!

I am building a colonial house in Ohio and love history. I named my daughter Abigail after Abigail Adams. So when building this house I am trying to incorporate some historical aspects and was wondering if you knew any of the colors used in the Old House of Abigail and John Adams? I have looked at all the pictures of the interior and exterior on the National Park Service webiste and might try to add some features. Thanks so much!!
Hi Kathleen – I wish I knew. Maybe if you contacted NPS they might have that information filed away? My guess is that they did custom mixes trying to replicate the way rooms looked during a certain time, so it might be difficult to ascertain. I think it’s so cool you are trying to find out, and I wish you luck in your search! In the meantime, definitely check out Benjamin Moore’s new-ish Williamsburg collection of historic colors – you may find some inspiration there.
